1. *It All Went Down The Drain

(Earl King Johnson)

We had so many good times
And some bad
We shared the happiness
Shared the sad
We suffered all..
All the miseries
Back when I had you girl
You had me
But when you saw something fresh
You wanted next to your pretty little flesh
Like a sewer in the rain
It all went down the drain
You and I

My life is so empty
What can I do
I ain't got nobody hey nobody
To take the place of you
And I'm not so strong
Honey as I used to be
Back when I had you baby
And you had me
Then you saw something fresh
You wanted next to your pretty little flesh
Like a sewer when it rains
It all went down the drain
You and I
You and I

You played the game
Pick and choose
Yesterday I sang a love song baby
Now I'm singing the blues
And I'm not so strong
As I used to be
Back when I had you baby
You had me
But when you saw something fresh
You wanted next to your pretty little flesh
Like the sewer in the rain
It all went down the drain
You and I
For you and I

What can I do
What can I do
To take the place of you
Like a sewer when it rains
You know it all went down the drain
You and I
You and I
Mmmmm you and I

2. *Ask Me 'Bout Nothin'(But The Blues)

(Deadric Malone / Henry Boozier)

Ask me who was the first man
To make a fire in the night
I don't know
Oh Lord I don't know
Ask me who thought of using
A candle for a light
I don't know
Oh Lord I don't know

But ask me how does a man feel
When he's got the blues
And I'd say
Misused abused down-hearted and blue
Know the reason I know this
Is cause the blues is all I was left with

Ask me why does a man
Have to reach beyond his need
I don't know
Lord have mercy I don't know
And ask me why does a tree
Have to shed its leaves
I don't know
Lord have mercy I don't know

Ask me how does a man feel
When he's got the blues
And I'd say
Misused abused down-hearted and blue
Know the reason I know this
Is cause the blues is all I was left with

Oh I could tell you how it feels
When you got a dirty deal
I could even tell you how it hurts
When you been stepped on
And treated just like dirt

Ask me why do all good things
Have to come to an end
I don't know
Lord have mercy I don't know
You see
Ask me nothin but about the blues
The blues is all that I was left with
Oh I could tell you how it feels
When you got a dirty deal
Tell you how it hurts
When you been stepped on and stepped on
And stepped on and treated just like dirt

Ask me nothin but about the blues
The blues is all that I was left with

3. *Don't Cry No More

(Deadric Malone)

Don't cry no more
Wipe away your tears
Don't cry no more baby
Wipe away your tears
And I know I know
That your love is real

Don't cry don't cry
I'm begging you
Don't cry no more baby
I'm begging you
Every tear you shed
Tells me that your love is real

Hey hey

You cried me a river
Cried me a sea
And I believe without a doubt
That you really really really love me

You cried me a river
Cried me a sea
And I believe without a doubt
That you really really really love me

Wipe away your tears
Don't cry no more baby
Wipe away your tears
I know I know that your love is real
Cry baby
Cry baby
It's crying time
And the loving ain't so easy
Oooh oooh
Don't want you to cry babe
Wipe away your tears
Wipe away your tears

Cried me a river
Cried me a sea
And I believe without a doubt
That you really really really really really really really love me
Cry no more baby
Wipe away your tears
Oh no oh no

And I believe
And I believe
And I believe without a doubt
That you really really really really love me

4. *Found Love

(Jimmy Reed)

I found true love
One worth me waiting for
I found true love
One worth me waiting for
I'm gonna sign her to a contract
And won't find one with flaws

It's hard to believe
The condition the world is in
It's hard to believe
The condition the world is in
You can't trust nobody
Girl you know it's a sin

It's hard to believe
The condition the world is in
It's hard to believe
The condition the world is in
You can't trust nobody
Girl you know it's a sin

I found true love
One worth me waiting for
I found true love
One worth me waiting for
I'm gonna sign her to a contract
And won't find one with flaws

5. *Come On Home

(Earl Randle / Willie Mitchell)

You've been gone
So long
No matter who's right
No matter who's wrong
Come on home
Come on home
Cause that's where you belong girl

Every morning
I say my grace
Hoping that we'll both
Get back into the race
Come on home
Come on home
Cause that's where you belong girl

I know the bright lights
They all glitter like gold
But girl we ain't gettin no younger
And this is gettin old
Come on home
Come on home
Cause that's where you belong girl

I know we both..
We both broke the law
Let's get together girl
And call it a draw
Come on home
Come on home
Cause that's where you belong girl

Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Hmmm hmmm hmmm
Come on home
Come on home
Cause that's where you belong girl

6. *Picture of a Broken Heart

(Boz Scaggs / Dennis Walker)

You're out there with friends
Going club to club
I see you almost every night
I watch you dance every every dance
Men lined up left and right
I hear you telling stories
'Bout your habits and your lies

You paint a pretty picture
Deception's quite an art
Just one look in your party face
And I can see a broken heart
I can see a broken heart

You wear your smile
Just a little too tight
Flirt too much with the band
You laugh and sing just a little too loud
Like a woman who's just lost her man
You're act is quite convincing
But loneliness leaves clues

You paint a pretty picture
Deception's quite an art
Just one look in your party face
And I can see a broken heart
I can see a broken heart

I can see a thousand heartaches
Hidden in your spell
And the hurt behind the sad blue eyes
I've been there
I've had my own high times
Yes I've had my falls
I can hear a lot of words
But that picture says it all

You paint a pretty picture
Deception's quite an art
Just one look in your party face
I can see a broken heart

You paint a pretty picture
Deception's quite an art
All I can see in your party face
I can see your broken heart
Ain't nothing but a party babe
Mmmm
You got your men lined up left and right
Hey
I hear you telling stories about your happy life
Hey hey hey
I can see your broken heart

7. *Love Letters

(E. Heyman / V. Young)

Love letters straight from your heart
Keep us so near while apart
I'm not alone in the night
When I can have all the love you write

I memorize every line
And I kiss the name that you sign
And darling then
I read again right from the start
Love letters straight from your heart

I memorize every line
And I kiss the name that you sign
And darling then
I read again right from the start
Love letters straight from your heart

8. *I've Got Your Love

(Boz Scaggs)

I don't need no fortune
I'll tell you the reason why
I've got more than anything
Money can buy
I've got your love love love
That's more than anything
Money can buy

Cause money can't buy that kind of love no

I was lost
I was drifting
That I won't deny
Till you gave your heart to me
Said let's give love a try
I've got your love love love
Here to hold me
Against the tide
Against the tide

You know a man sworn to nothing
Can make you wanna cry
I came to my senses
Baby dry your eyes
I've got your love love love
That's more than anything
Any old anything
Mmmmm

I was lost
I was drifting
That I won't deny
Till you gave your heart to me
Saying let's give love a try
I've got your love love love
Here to hold me
Against the tide
Against the tide
Against the tide

Got love
Got love more than anything
Hey hey hey hey
Money can buy
Hey money can buy

9. *Early In The Morning

(John Lee "Sonny Boy" Williamson)

When a girl reach the age of eighteen
She begin to think she's grown
And that's the kind of girl
You can't never find at home
Come see me early in the morning
Baby 'bout the break of day
You oughta saw me hug my pillow
Where my baby used to lay

One drink of wine two drinks of gin
Pretty young girl got me in the state I'm in
Come see me early in the morning
Baby 'bout the break of day
Lord you oughta saw me hug my pillow
Where my baby used to lay

Passed by the juke joint
Peeked through the door
She was doing the boogie woogie
In the middle of the floor
Come see me early in the morning
Baby 'bout the break of day
Lord you oughta saw me hug my pillow
Where my baby used to lay

Where my baby used to lay

10. *Your Good Thing (Is About To End)

(David Porter / Isaac Hayes)

I don't have to beg you to hold me
Cause somebody else will
You don't have to love me when I want it
Cause somebody else will
Your so called friends say you don't need it
When all the time they're trying to get it
Lookout
Your good thing is coming to an end
Your real good thing is about to end

All those nights I watched the four walls
I didn't have to watch them all alone
When another woman said she wanted me
I didn't have to tell her I was your very own
You've had all the love I've got
But even ice melts to water when it gets hot
Your good thing is coming to an end
I mean your real good thing is about to end

I'm getting myself back together
It's gonna be tough I know
But when the right woman comes along
You can bet I won't say no
Your real good thing
I said it's coming to an end
Your real real good thing
Is about to end

Your so called friends say you don't need it
When all the time they're trying to get it
Lookout
Your good thing is coming to an end
Talking about your real real good thing
Said it's coming to an end
Talking about the good thing
The real thing
Gonna be a brand new day
When your good thing goes away
Call me Mister gone gone gone gone gone away
You'd better have something going on
Cause your good thing is moving on

Talking about your good thing
Is coming to an end

11. *T-Bone Shuffle

(T-Bone Walker)

Let your hair down baby
Let's have a natural ball
Let your hair down baby
Let's have a natural ball
Cause when you ain't happy
Aint no fun at all

You can't take it with you
That's one thing for sure
No you can't take it with you
That's one thing for sure
There ain't nothing wrong with you girl
The T-bone shuffle can't cure

Have fun while you can
Fate's an awful thing
Have fun while you can
Fate's an awful thing
You can't tell what might happen
That's why I love to sing

12. *Sick And Tired

(Christopher Kenner / Dave Bartholomew)

Oh baby
What you gonna do
Oh baby
What you gonna do
I'm sick and tired
Fooling around with you

Wake up in the morning
Get you something to eat
Before I go to work
I even brush your teeth
Come home.. still in bed
Got a rag tied around your head

Oh baby
What you gonna do
I'm sick and tired
Fooling around with you

Last time I'm telling you to change your ways
I'm telling you I mean what I say
Last time I'm telling you to stop that jive
Before you find yourself outside

Oh baby
What you gonna do
I'm sick and tired
Fooling around with you

Wake up in the morning
Get you something to eat
Before I go to work
I even brush your teeth
Come home.. still in bed
Got a rag tied around your head

Oh baby
What you gonna do
I'm sick and tired
Fooling around with you

Last time I'm telling you to change your ways
I'm telling you I mean what I say
Last time I'm telling you to stop that jive
Before you find yourself outside

Oh baby
What you gonna do
I'm sick and tired
Fooling around with you

Oh baby
What you gonna do
Oh baby
What you gonna do
I'm sick and tired
Fooling around with you

13. *After Hours

(Boz Scaggs)

After all the ups and downs
All the due's are done
I want you to meet me after hours
And we'll make a little run
I want you to meet me baby
After the lights go down low
I want you to meet me after hours
Then we'll take it nice and slow

Now don't you go out looking
No telling what you'll find
It's a jungle out there baby
But just take it off your mind
I want you to meet me later
After the lights go down low
I want you to meet me after hours
And leave the crazies at the door

You know it's been a long time
Since you came around this way
And you look like all the pennies
I've been saving for a rainy day
Would be awful nice to see you babe
After the lights go down low
Cause you know there ain't no telling
What after hours got in store

14. *Goodnight Louise

(Boz Scaggs)

Goodnight Louise
It's lights out for me
It was hot for a minute
We were right down there in it
But hey Lou c'est la vie

Sweet romance
One last dance
I should be moving on
But they're playing our song
I might Louise I just might

What's in a moon one lonely night
What's in a heart that is true
Some would say that means everything
Don't mean a thing without you

So flies love
And stars up above
You were first but not the last
You're the queen of my past
Goodnight Louise.. goodnight

You were first
But not the last
You're the queen of my past
Goodnight.. Louise.. Goodnight
Goodnight

From The Liner Notes

I've wanted to do this rhythm and blues album for a long time. It's a tribute to some of my heroes, some of the great R&B singers, songwriters, and musicians. Defining the musical territory was tricky at first, like trying to draw a line between where the blues and gospel end and where R&B begins; where R&B ends and becomes soul, funk, rock & roll, Stax, Motown, the Philly style, and on and on. So I'll just say that this record starts with a bluesman going from the Mississippi Delta to the midwestern mecca of Chicago where he's recorded in a studio on electric instruments. Jimmy Reed's "Found Love" is early R&B in a primal state compared to say, T-Bone Walker's "T-Bone Shuffle," an uptown cocktail version of twelve-bar blues with an upright bass and saxaphones in place of foot stomping and harmonica. T-Bone's audience might have been the smart martini crowd in Dallas or New York snapping their fingers and shaking their heads. Meanwhile, back in Chicago, they were clubbing it, listening to Junior Wells and Buddy Guy doing "Early In The Morning" in traditional blues form but with a heavy hit of electricity and attitude. From basic blues-style guitar, harmonica, and vocal inflections, R&B absorbed the influences of many players, many places. The stylists and juke box artists, the cover bands and jump joints - each added their own spin, "from Natchez to Mobile, from Memphis to St. Jo... wherever the four winds blow"* as the song says. From New Orleans to Kansas City to St. Louis to Houston...

I considered a lot of material for this record, and ultimately I chose the songs I liked to sing the most. (I could have stayed with Bobby "Blue" Bland and Jimmy Reed for twenty songs each, but as anyone knows who's tried to stand in those shoes, you might as well try to re-hang the moon.) Each of them reflects a different aspect of what we call rhythm and blues, a monumental contribution African-Americans made to twentieth century culture.

The music is infused with their humanity and soul. The legacy of these men and these women has touched us all.
