Boz Scaggs is still silky smooth at 60

The veteran singer delivers an authentic blend of New Orleans R&B, jazz-tinged rock and blues in Anaheim.

By ROBERT KINSLER

Special to the Register

Boz Scaggs' performance in Anaheim on Tuesday night played out exactly as a frequent concert-goer might hope. There was a mix of old and new, with Scaggs' best-known material off his 1976 masterwork "Silk Degrees" included throughout the 100-minute set.

But anyone who has seen disappointing performances by artists over 60 was likely thrilled with the impressive – if decidedly laid-back – approach taken by the 63-year-old Texas native and his supporting ensemble.

"Lowdown" sounded timeless, with a thick R&B groove positioned around Scaggs' still-distinctive baritone, and "What Do You Want the Girl to Do" personified the New Orleans sound that seems to bind Scaggs' sonic instincts with the two female backing vocalists and six other musicians who shared the Grove of Anaheim stage.

But the concert's greatest moments came when Scaggs explored territory less familiar to the audience. The set opener, "Hercules," was an inspired and animated R&B powerhouse that would please the Van Morrison faithful, while "Georgia" was likewise a fast-paced showcase for the band (lead guitarist Shane Theriot's fiery playing was a good fit throughout the night).

And "Harbor Nights" (another song off "Silk Degrees") allowed the band to stretch, with the song beginning as a slow modern jazz vibe and eventually reaching a zenith thanks to explosive keyboard and horn solos from members of Scaggs' band.

The night's loftiest points came courtesy of two selections from Scaggs' 2001 comeback album, "Dig." Both "Desire" and "Vanishing Point" allowed Scaggs to showcase his lead guitar skills, with his blues-minded fret work often delivered artfully around his vocals.

In fact, a ragged version of "Lido Shuffle" was the weakest of the 14 songs played by Scaggs.

One of the joys of getting to a show early is the chance to discover promising young talent. Such was the case with the impressive and memorable 30-minute set from David Jacobs-Strain.

While a gifted singer with a pleasing voice, Jacobs-Strain's jaw-dropping skills on acoustic guitar helped him blend folk, instrumental guitar and Delta blues across a five-song set. His sense of humor (he walked on stage and said, "I'd like to introduce a friend of mine. I've known him for almost 23 years" before putting on his guitar to play) and strengths as a songwriter were clear on his set-ending "Ocean or a Teardrop." Jacobs-Strain was able to easily get the audience to participate in a rousing sing-along during "Kokomo Blues" and dazzled with his slap technique during "Bowlegged Charlie."

By the mid-'70s, Boz Scaggs had amassed a varied body of work, rocking out in the music explosion of San Francisco in the late '60s with Steve Miller and laying down some molten Blues with Duane Allman and the Muscle Shoals Rhythm section before moving ever closer to full-blown soul music on a series of solo albums, culminating with 1976's Silk Degrees, which hogged the Billboard album charts for 115 weeks, spawning three chart-topping singles in the process of becoming one of the most memorable and beloved albums of the 1970s. During the last two decades Boz Scaggs has released albums featuring mostly spirited and confident collections of R&B cover tunes and originals. During live performances, his distinctive silky and sexy voice is capable of melting audiences, especially the female spectators among them.

'Runnin' Blue' was recorded March 10, 1974, live at the Paramount Theatre, Oakland, California.

Review by Thom Jurek - All Music Guide:

Runnin' Blue was recorded live on March 10, 1974, at the Paramount Theater in Oakland, just across the Bay from Boz Scaggs' adopted hometown of San Francisco.

At the time the band was on tour supporting his most commercially successful album to date, Slow Dancer, over two years before he broke the charts wide open with Silk Degrees.

There are 18 cuts here, and eight of them come from Slow Dancer. The rest reach all the way back to his 1969 self-titled album for Atlantic; his Columbia debut, Moments, and Boz Scaggs & Band (both issued in 1971); and My Time from 1972.

In other words, this is Scaggs playing through his catalog. His backing group is made up of a stellar cast of characters including guitarists Les Dudek (remember the hit "Shannon"?) and Chris Michie, jazz bassist Gene Santini, drummer Richard Schlosser, and Joachim Young on keyboards. But that's just the core. Scaggs is well-known for employing larger ensembles on his tours and this one is no exception: Julia Tillman, Carolyn Willis, and Merna Matthews are his backing chorus, and an orchestral horn and string section is also on-stage, conducted by Fred Mergy.

This set was released by Europe's Music Avenue label, and licensed via an organization in London. There is no Sony imprint here, but that doesn't make it a bootleg either. It feels as if this is a radio broadcast, but it may simply be a board tape dressed up a bit for CD. The sound isn't pristine, but it's far from dodgy. Everything can be heard clearly, if there is just a shade too much bass. The performance more than accounts for it: it's inspired, near flawless, and utterly soulful; it literally crackles with energy.

Scaggs was always a great bandleader who knew what he wanted both in the studio and on the road. What's beautiful here is that the crowd on hand knows the material, recognizing almost every song, and Scaggs thanks them sincerely: Johnny Bristol's "Pain of Love," "Dinah Flo," "I'll Be Long Gone," "You Make It So Hard (To Say No)," Ronnie Dyson's hit "Just Don't Want to Be Lonely," an amazing "Monkey Time," "Take It for Granted," "There Is Someone Else," etc.

Scaggs penned all but two cuts here, and he's got the band well rehearsed and full of fire. The gorgeous R&B otherworldiness comes through in his voice, and his sense of groove and time is impeccable. In other words, if you dig Scaggs -- especially the earlier material -- you need this. Again, the sound quality is not really a detriment and it is more than compensated for in the price -- this baby is cheap and there is no reason to not to recommend it heartily. If anything, it goes a step further in establishing the pure weight and depth of Scaggs' contribution to modern blue-eyed soul and R&B.
